This is one of the most hated bridges in Venice. It's a Calatrava design and a lot of the surface is made of glass. It gets super-slippery in the rain and people topple over the edge into the canal sometimes. I can't imagine that happening, but I can attest to it being almost frictionless. I mean the guard rails are pretty big, but I guess if you're tall and have a high center of gravity, I suppose I could see it happening... #TreyRatcliff #Venice #Bridge #Calatrava #Canal #boat
The road to Mount Cook is great for sports cars. My friend Mark, who is really into this stuff, says that the road is perfectly engineered like a race track, so you can take things to the next level. Not that HE does that or anything. He did tell me a little tip that "his friend" told him. That since it's a dead-end road, you can go the speed limit from the beginning to the end and if you don't see anyone, then you can turn around and do it again, going wild! #TreyRatcliff #MountCook #Aoraki
Out in Paradise, we went on a lovely little hike around the area where the trust is located. It's a very easy walk, and it goes by a few of these calm, tiny little lakes with perfect reflections. The hills are often covered with sheep too, which is calming in its own way, as they look like little clouds on a green sky.
Cricket in a sandstorm... and it looks like Burning Man is gonna be back on again this year! It's time to warm up my cricket bat! Also, would someone please explain the scoring while I do that? It seems a national disgrace that I've lived in New Zealand for 10 years and I still am completely bamboozled by the game... #TreyRatcliff #Cricket #Sandstorm #BurningMan
Here's a little pre-Covid view of street life in London. I guess I could photoshop little masks on everyone and say I took it yesterday. Actually, I don't even know if there's a lot of people out on the streets there, but I suppose there are a few. I know Stu who runs all the tech and stuff for me is in full lockdown in Scotland... so there's really none of this going on there, I suspect. #TreyRatcliff #London #UK #England #StreetPhotography #monochrome #shadow
One cool thing about the Mount Cook area is you can kind of walk anywhere, even though most people stick to the many existing trails. It's a massive area with little rivers that weave this way and that. I usually put on my headphones, listen to some Hans Zimmer, and rove around for a few hours... besides getting a few photos, it's both relaxing and invigorating. #TreyRatcliff #landscape #aoraki #mountcook #nationalpark
The trek to Burning Man is always an adventure. Before we had our own RV that we store in Reno, I would rent an RV from somewhere around the country and drive in. I think during that week, there are like 50,000 RVs rented and it's usually cheaper to get them somewhere else and make the drive in. I plan it all out so there are some cool photo stops along the way. This one is from Sedona, Arizona. #TreyRatcliff #Landscape #Arizona #Mountain #Rock #adventure #explore
This is the last photo I got from New Zealand before jumping on a 10 hour flight to Antarctica. It was a most excellent omen of a sunset... #TreyRatcliff #church #sunset #newzealand #tekapo
Today I was with my Burning Man roomie Rene and we were relaxing after going to the Shipwrecked festival together and had the Mayan Warrior channel on the TV. We were watching the 2019 set from Jan Blomqvist and we saw ourselves in the video. We were in the background rolling along in Big Red on the way to the Photowalk. We could barely make ourselves out, mostly because of my bunny ears.
I was thinking that when travel restrictions end again, the first place I will go after Austin is back to Japan. This photo is from my last trip there when we saw a few of these ladies wearing outfits that complemented the green bamboo forests of Kyoto perfectly. It's like Japan is a random-photo generator where interesting sights are popping up around you all day long. #TreyRatcliff #japan #hdr #bamboo #kyoto
A view from an epic morning in Hong Kong... Not long after this, we took a ferry over to Macau. They have the craziest casino games in there. I read that this one giant casino there makes more money in a day than Las Vegas does in a month (pre-Covid)... One of my theories is that many mainland Chinese people have a lot of superstition around numbers and their meanings, which probably makes them think they have some divine access to gambling power. Just a theory. 🙂 #TreyRatcliff #HongKong #Fog
Here's a new photo from a unique area of the south island of New Zealand between Queenstown and Milford Sound. There is a cool chunk of land where there is this glowing yellow matte of moss. It's super thick and spongey... It's so soft that you can fall backwards into it and bounce softly like an Earth-trampoline. #TreyRatcliff #Landscape #NewZealand #HDR
There is a funny new ad campaign in New Zealand about taking photos "Under the Social Influence," warning people not to take photos of themselves with their arms outstretched on a mountaintop... It's pretty funny and I wrote about the same thing in my last book. Personally, I choose not to do it, but I did take this photo of some Influencers that all took turns taking the same photo over and over again... This photo was taken on top of Walter Peak over Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown. #TreyRatcliff
A view of Lake Wakatipu while on the way to Glenorchy and Paradise, nestled in the Southern Alps... Just down there on the right is my favorite yoga/meditation retreat called Aro-Ha. If you end up going, I have a few pieces of art hanging there from the collection. You'll be immediately blissed, zenned out and ready for your retreat! 🙂 #TreyRatcliff #Glacial #Lake #LakeWakatipu #NewZealand #Landscape #Still #Reflection
Oh, someday I'll have the easy life of my spirit animal: the Japanese Snow Monkey. I can sit in a hot tub all day while monkeys scratch my back and make funny faces to entertain me. #TreyRatcliff #Japan #Sleep #Swim #HotSpring #Relax #Spa #SnowMonkey #Portrait
Here's a new photo I just finished from London. This colorful area reminded me a lot of the Ginza shopping area of Tokyo. I don't really do a lot of shopping being a minimalist, but I do enjoy taking photos of cool shopping areas! #TreyRatcliff #HDR #AuroraHDR #Architecture #London
Here's a new photo I finished from my last trip to Hong Kong. I took this on a midnight stroll... it's one of my favorite things to do in cities... just to walk around at midnight with my earphones, listening to music and taking photos until I get utterly exhausted and return to crash out for the night. #TreyRatcliff #HongKong #Architecture #Garden #Arch
Every now and then, even though it is summer down here in the southern hemisphere, we get a fresh coating of snow. I love it... all the more reason to get out and take photos then get cozy by the fire to read and have hot cocoa... This is a view from The Remarkables looking back towards Queenstown, which maybe you can see in the lower right. #TreyRatcliff #NewZealand #Landscape #Snow #Mountain
Here's a new photo I completed from a recent photo road trip across the South Island of New Zealand... I have many more coming up this year! I'm super excited... quite a meditation for me to be out taking photos and then spend the evening editing them. I have a big adventure planned on the south island here really soon and will share the experience soon! #TreyRatcliff #Roadtrip #Pass #Mountain
How much do I love the Carribean? LOADS! I want to go back there and spend more time… I took this on a very fun trip to Virgin Gorda where every night saw amazing sunsets and every day started with incredible sunrises. #TreyRatcliff #VirginGorda #Carribean #Sea #Sunset #Beach #Ocean #Rocks
Here’s what it looks like when you get to the top of the Remarkables and look back towards Queenstown. Beautiful, eh? It was almost impossible getting up here… I was so tired, and I had even taken a snowmobile most of the way up. Drudging up a mountain through knee deep snow much be one of the most taxing activities in the world! #TreyRatcliff #NewZealand #Climb #Mountain #Queenstown #Landscape
Yesterday we had a fun boat party here in summery New Zealand. There was a tiny flotilla of people out to celebrate our friend Michelle's birthday and we cruised on out to this awesome deserted island. I think it's called Beehive Island. I don't know if you watch my silly Instagram stories or not, but there is some more behind-the-scenes on there. #TreyRatcliff #Island #Deserted #Beach #Sea #Ocean #NewZealand
