I can't wait for all this coronamess to end so things get back to kinda normal... I'll probably celebrate by going here to Hakone, Japan. It's famous for it's natural hot baths... there are many ryokans there (where traveling Samurai used to stay) where you can get amazing food, enjoy the hot baths, sleep on futons, and lounge around all day in a kimono and watch the trees sway in the wet breeze. #TreyRatcliff #Japan #Hakone #Path #travel #motion

One day in Thailand I jumped into a boat and headed over to the archipelago in search of that cool island from the very first James Bond movie Dr. No. It turns out there are lots of islands that have that same look with the undercut limestone. The snorkeling is great around here and the water is always perfectly clear. Sometimes, however, when you get out into the ocean, you can see a big floating pile of trash, and that is really kind of depressing... #TreyRatcliff #Thailand #Island #Swim
In Koh Samui, one evening we went to the other side of the island where the fishing boats come in. That part was pretty interesting, but I was drawn away to these oyster farmers. I waded into the water with them to follow their movements. They would make little “clicking/rubbing” sounds with their fingers to get the oysters to make themselves seen in the sand below. I don't know why that worked, but it does! #TreyRatclff #thailand #Oysters #Sunset #Farm #hunt #silhouette #travel
As soon as travel seems safer, I think one of the first places I'll go is back here to Japan. Every time I go, I try to visit new towns and try new things. It's easy to get stuck in Tokyo (where I took this) because there is an infinity of options and endless distractions... so I usually plan to visit 2-3 new countryside towns where I can get lost. And I heard here is an island with like millions of bunnies on it... gotta go there to and be covered in cute, fluffy bunnies. #TreyRatcliff #Tokyo
Here is Gaudi's masterpiece in Spain, the Sagrada Familia. We got access to the upper level where the Pope hangs out when he rocks into town. I swear, Popes always get the best seats. Totes McPopes... #TreyRatcliff #Barcelona #Architecture #Cathedral #Religious #Religion #Gaudi #SagradaFamilia #Spain
Still trying to get tickets to Kiwiburn here in New Zealand... man they are really tough to find! I was going through my people photos to organize them and I found this fun one... most people don't know that over 1,000 kids go to Burning Man every year. I actually brought Ethan when he was 11 or 12. Wow did his eyes bug out! Haha that was so fun... Yeah, there is a saying there that "Burning Man: Where kids are treated like Gods and adults are treated like children." #TreyRatcliff #BurningMan
Here's a new photo I just finished from Hong Kong... I haven't been there for a few years, but I have a huge backlog of photos to process "just in case there is a pandemic" - which turns out to be a rather prescient plan! I have about 93,000 photos I haven't even looked at yet... so every week I pick about 200-300 random ones and process them to see if any are interesting. Most are not, and I wonder why I even took them, but I do like this one. #TreyRatcliff #HongKong #Architecture #HDR
Here's one of the last photos I took before leaving Antarctica. You can tell what countries people are from because they all wear different uniforms. The Kiwis are the ones in the orange coats and the Americans are in the red ones. There were also a few people from the Korean and Italian bases too... The Italians had, by far, the coolest uniforms... they all looked like they raced for Ferrari! 🙂 #TreyRatcliff #ice #Antarctica #LC130 #Adventure #explore
These are the braided rivers that feed off the glaciers that feed Lake Wakatipu here on the South Island of New Zealand. It's pretty fun to go jet boating around here... just up there where the lake begins is where Glenorchy is and just beyond is one of my favorite yoga and meditation retreats called Aro Ha. #TreyRatcliff #NewZealand #Glenorchy #Glacier #Glacial #River #Landscape #SouthIsland #Lake #LakeWakatipu
The road to Paradise, New Zealand... there are a ton of amazing hikes around this area... heck, just walking down this dirt road for a few hours can provide dozens of amazing sights. These are some of the first mountains the wet winds across the Tasman Sea encounter, so they usually create a ton of interesting clouds. #TreyRatcliff #NewZealand #Paradise #Road #Mountains #hike
From a mini-hike around Paradise, New Zealand... the air was warm and still so there were a ton of great reflection shots to be had. All these ponds and lakes are fed from glaciers and rains up in the Southern Alps. It's nice to be hanging out in pure nature! #TreyRatcliff #NewZealand #Pond #Reflection #Paradise #Hike #Walk #Glenorchy
Another 1 of 1,000 empty beaches in New Zealand... what a great place to be stuck in during the pandemic! This is Te Henga (Bethells Beach), where the Waitakere River flows into the Tasman Sea (the sea between New Zealand and Australia). At the end of this beach is a massive cave where you can find and frolic with some penguins. I read a recent science article that claims that penguins actually originated here in NZ, but I'm not sure about that... fake penguin-news and all... #TreyRatcliff #NZ
Yesterday from a hike in a place called "Paradise" (that's the actual name!) in New Zealand. They have these amazing remote huts there that you can rent for about $50 USD. There is no electricity, but there's running water and wood-fired stoves. A few have iron bathtubs outside and you can heat them from underneath with fire. They are perfect for stargazing. Keeping fires going in multiple places is a special skill that I am learning just in case the Earth goes into full dystopia. #TreyRatcliff
New Peak Design Goodies on Kickstarter - I bet you didn't think they would make this! That clever team has come up with something I'll probably use even more than all their cool camera and bag gear - this slick case and mounting system for your phone and a bunch of accessories to go with it. If you have the iPhone 11 and 12 or a Samsung S20. For everyone else, or at least most of you, there is a Universal Mount... #TreyRatcliff #FindYourPeak #Mobile #Case #Mount
Here's another new photo from the road trip around the North Island of New Zealand (9-photo panorama). Speaking of NZ, we had our elections last night and Jacinda Ardern won in a landslide... it looks like people are approving of her handling of the pandemic. We currently don't have any cases at all, although I'm not sure how long the country can hold the Covid at bay. #TreyRatcliff #NorthIsland #NewZealand #Landscape #Drone #DJI #Mavic2
I had decided to spend some extra time exploring the snowy recesses from the north. This is actually the place that inspired Spirited Away, if you're a Japanese Anime geek like me... it's called Ginzan Onsen and I stayed right over there on top of that cool old Japanese cottage. Down underground was a little network of beautiful, natural onsens all fed by hot natural mineral water. It was incredible. #TreyRatcliff #GinsanOnsen #Onsen #Spa #Japan
I recently posted my "7 Reasons I Moved to New Zealand," and it got quite a bit of traction... there was another reason I didn't mention... this photo reminded me of it. In NZ, you can basically go anywhere at any time to take photos. I often hop over people's fences and just walk around until I find a good angle. I've never gotten in trouble... if I do end up meeting a farmer, we just have an awesome chat and I make a new friend! #TreyRatcliff #NewZealand #NorthIsland #Landscape
Before I get into the panoply of reasons, I can first tell you this is one of my favorite new photos I took a few weeks ago on a road trip through the North Island. Just looking at this photo, I remember the calmness and serenity in the natural Fibonacci rolling of the hills. It’s another one of those meaningful moments that sneaks up on you, and they mostly seem to happen in nature, at least for me. What a trip! Now head over to the link to read more. :) #TreyRatcliff #NewZealand #Livestyle
Tomorrow I'll be posting the "7 Reasons I Moved to New Zealand," on the blog/social media. People have been asking me to do this forever since I moved here about 10yrs ago. So, I guess it only took about a decade to write! But my reasons haven't changed, but now I can describe them in a more cogent way since I've lived here with these awesome Kiwis for so long. As for this pic, this is from my most recent trip to NYC when I was on the Americas speaking tour across 20 cities. #TreyRatcliff
Burning Man in New Zealand - Kiwiburn! Man, I'm really excited to go to this after the regular Burning Man was cancelled. Since everything is wide-open here in NZ with no cases of the virus, it means these kinds of massive events can ensue! All the tickets sold out in less than 15 seconds! So, if you have any extra tickets, please contact me at [email protected] since I have a bunch of friends that are keen to go. #Kiwiburn
This is back in the Earnslaw Burn about a 30 minute chopper ride from my place. I had Choppy fly me in here about four times to get different photos for every season... this is a pano made out of about 50 different photos. All along the top there are glaciers and you can sometimes hear them make cool cracking sounds as some ice tumbles down. #TreyRatcliff #EarnslawBurn #NewZealand #Glacier #Snow #Ice #Waterfall #Melt
